Am I Depressed or Just Lazy? | Somber ScribblerAm I depressed or simply lazy? Often they ask me, "Am I depressed or simply lazy?" It is a legitimate question, since many people suffering from clinical depression will initially feel like they are lazy, not wanting to leave the sofa or get out of bed. On the surface, the two — laziness and depression — seem to share some similarities. But dig a little deeper and you can quickly determine whether you are depressed or simply be lazy. Depression is a serious and debilitating mental illness that affects millions of Americans every year. It not only causes anguish for the person who suffers from it, but also for his loved ones and friends. For employers, it results in millions of hours, and billions of dollars, of loss of productivity. Key differences between depression and laziness The key point on clinical depression is that people don't want to feel that way. He's completely out of control. They did not (or did not) do something that brought the depression. While depressed sensation episodes can be caused by increased stress, usually most people with this condition cannot trace it to anything in their life. That's what makes depression worse. It hits a person outside the blue, for no reason. (If there was a reason, at least it might make some sense.) Laziness, on the other hand, is a clear and simple option. Whether we admit it or not, when we are lazy, we are simply choosing not to do things in our life. Cleaning up the apartment? I'll get close to that tomorrow... Meanwhile, people who suffer from depression don't even notice that their apartment is messy or unharmed. It does not enter the equation. The last thing you're thinking or worried about is cleaning your apartment. Or themselves. So I guess I'm Lazy? Being lazy is not a crime. But it must not be confused with a serious mental illness. Just because you feel particularly inmotivated one day to get out of bed, go to class or work, and do what is expected of you doesn't mean you're depressed. It is likely that it is only a passing case of the "blahs". Depression not only lasts one day or two. To diagnose clinical depression, you need to feel that same way, without motivation for at least 2 weeks (according to the American Psychiatric Association). Most people who suffer from this condition spend weeks—and sometimes even months— feeling horrible, unmotivated, alone and desperate before seeking treatment. That's a key difference. Usually, if you feel lazy, it's a mood that happens within a day or two, it'll happen. Soon, you get up, go to class or work, clean the apartment. You do what it takes, and you have the ability to do it. People with depression don't have that capacity. They have lost every concept of meaning in their life, time, responsibilities. It just doesn't matter. Nothing matters. How can I say I'm depressed or lazy? You can quickly and easily tell the difference between depression and laziness by taking either our long (has about five minutes for most people to complete) or our one that takes only one minute or two to complete. If any of these scientific questionnaires suggests that you may be suffering from depression, it is likely to be a sign that it is not just laziness. Instead, it can be a sign of real depression—something that should check more thoroughly. Being lazy once in a while is normal — we all are. But when that laziness seems to encompass weeks — or even months — it can be a sign of depression. Please check. Last medical review on February 12, 2018 Read this next series of words
